My copy of Katie Hubbard’s vegan zine Don’t Eat Off the Sidewalk arrived yesterday. I’m really excited to start making some of the recipes, and I think I’d like to start with the biscuits. As of two days ago, Katie still had 40 copies left of issue #1. I would strongly recommend spending your $2.50 (including shipping) on a copy. Issue #2 will be out soon.

- The legacy of Hollywood’s favorite sci-fi writer — Philip K. Dick’s kids have their own production company nowadays to handle movie versions of their dad’s writing.
- Cookie nirvana — These vegan cookies apparently taste just like Samoas. I’m all about it.
- The three year itch — “While divorce rates here [here = UK] are the lowest they have been since 1984, figures from the Office for National Statistics show that the crunch time for both married and cohabiting couples going their separate ways is now most likely to be after three or four years.” I love a study.

You’ll let me do what? — Gabe Kaplan sends increasingly bizarro emails to people who take him completely seriously. He’s turned the fun into a book.

Indoor Beer Olympics this Friday — I think I could medal in the drunken spelling bee.
The Near-Fame Experience (via Gawker) — Santino Rice of Project Runway is referred to as the “scoundrel of the second season;” I like scoundrels. Also, Andrae Gonzalo is crazy insightful.

- Chloe Sevigny, The Early Years — Vintage Sassy editorial. I remember this one, because Chloe seemed so effortlessly cool. She does an amazing job as judgmental Nicki on Big Love. She’s the reason I [sometimes] watch the show.

- Epic Comic Book Series Is Animated for DVD — Darwyn Cooke’s The New Frontier is now an animated movie. Cooke fought to keep Lois Lane and Wonder Woman in the film. Sidebar. When I was a kid, female action figures were, like, impossible to find. Target had Black Canary, Zatanna, Jean Grey and Emma Frost in stock this weekend. It was pretty sweet.

On Thursday night, I went out to watch the Mets beat up the Dodgers (13-9). Sadly, my favorite Met, Lastings Milledge, had the night off. Also, I ate garlic fries.
On Friday, I went to the El Rey to see The Bird and the Bee with friends. Lowlight of the show was when a trashed Sia (seriously, girl looked like an epileptic Stevie Wonder) joined the bird for a bossanova cover of “How Deep Is Your Love” (I can scarcely believe it myself) during the encore.
After the concert, we went to a Ralph’s in Koreatown just about midnight to purchase the last Harry Potter book. No lines, plus I got Ziplocs & Lean Cuisines (5 roasted vegetable pizzas for $10, hot damn)! After breakfast and errands on Saturday morning, I read both books 6 & 7. Shitty ending.
Sunday was for more errands. IKEA. I just don’t ever want to go to IKEA again.

- The Embargo Age Is Over: Scholastic Begs People Not to Read Harry Potter, Sues Retailers — In a stupefying display of wtfness, Scholastic asks those lucky people to whom retailers have already delivered HP7 to not freaking open the packages. Don’t push the button; the button is bad.
- Anya Hindmarch: The Interview — Fashionista talks to Hindmarch about that damned — but very well intentioned — bag. Nice to see that Hindmarch is just as bemused about its success as I am. My favorite bit is in the comments where someone states that bags sold somewhere in London were put into plastic bags at the point of sale.
Last night, I went with a small group of friends out to Seven Grand after work. Only not so much, because Seven Grand was closed from a private party. (Dear 7G, please put a freaking calendar on your website.) The doorman suggested we try the Golden Gopher, owned by the same people. The Golden Gopher wasn’t opening until 8, and it was 7. So we pressed on to Broadway Bar. They were open. I hadn’t been there before, but I enjoyed it. Not so much with the beers on tap, but, at least, they had Stella…
