There's a lovely leftie/anarchist bookstore run by a draft-dodger who stuck around for 30-odd years. If you must visit the 'coffee shops' avoid the cake. Really. It's not good for you. I had the whitey from hell after too much cake. The Van Gogh museum is a 'don't miss'. The Rijksmuseum is a bit big and drab but has some excellent stuff in it. Avoid the torture museum. It's rubbish. It looks like a dark, grotty school gym full of dark, grotty school gym equipment. Which may float your boat but does little for me ;) Disclaimer: I seem to spend a lot of time at Schiphol but never actually get into Amsterdam these days.
